Facsimile of original edition, published by Scribners in 1883 - this edition reproduces the Howard Pyle illustrations and is considered by many to be the finest modern version of English outlaw's stirring adventures. 23 full-page illustrations are reproduced alongside the text.
Comprising eleven chapters and an epilogue, the text is decorated with illustrative head and tail pieces in the late nineteenth century style, which add to the olde-world flavour. The illustrations include "The Merry Friar sings a goodly song", "Robin and the Tinker at the Blue Boar Inn", "Merry Robin Stops and Stranger in Scarlet" and many more. Each has a title block in elegant calligraphic text and incidental typographic decorations, with a drawing of the scene - all in Pyle's unique and atmospheric style.
