The Nuremberg collection is one of the great works of the 15th Century - an illustrated history of the world designed by the celebrated artists Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. This selection represents the best of their work. The plates depict 91 city views as they appeared in the 15th Century. The cityscapes are superbly detailed and exhibit a tentative grasp of perspective.
The great European cities are here (Paris, Rome, Prague, Athens and Munich) plus the holy city of Jerusalem. Of special note is the quality of the printwork: for this we have Anton Korberger to thank - the most renowned German printer of the time. During his lifetime he elevated printmaking from a craft to an art. The final word to him: 'Nothing like this has hitherto appered to increase and heighten the delight of men... do not let this book slip through your hands.'Illustrations:
