Female Abolitionists

In the period of North American history before women had the right to vote, a number of both black and white women nevertheless worked tirelessly for the abolition of slavery. Through petitions, lectures, published pamphlets and poems, essays, sermons and other forms of activism, many women spoke and wrote passionately against slavery - and fought hard for changes to the law. In educating and inspiring change their voices had significant imapcts on the discourse of the time around this institution. 
The black women included in this collection are: Ellen Craft, Sarah Mapps Douglass, Charlotte Forten, Sarah Louise Forten, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Mary Prince, Mary Ann Shadd, Maria W. Stewart, Sojourner Truth. Leading white female abolitionists include: Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Margaret Chandler, Lydia Maria Child, Angelika E. Grimke, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
