The Four Books of Architecture
An accessible paperback edition of the work of the great renaissance architect who gave his name to the term Palladian, describing a style of architecture that adheres to classical concepts. Book One concerns building materials and techniques and the five orders of architecture, Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite. The second presents a series of designs for private houses and mansions such as his renowned 'The Rotunda'. Each plate gives a front view and floor plan. Book three is concerned with public architecture such as street plans, bridges, piazzas and basilicas, largely of ancient Roman inspiration or origin. The fourth book is a series of designs for temples, including plans and sketches of the Parthenon. Images include floor plans, capitals of columns, the construction of spirals, facades, ornamentation, balustrades and a range of architectural detail.
