Posadas Popular Mexican Prints
Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was Mexico's most illustrious graphic artist. Here are some of his best engravings, brought together in the 1960s from original woodblocks and plates from the 1930 'Monografia'.

Posadas work covered many wide subjects - book illustrations such as cook books and fortune telling publications, periodicals and newspapers, childrens books, novels, and the famous political broadside posters.

This book is a showcase of 273 of his best engravings, all completed for A Vengas Arroyo, printer and publisher of Mexico City, created using two techiniques: engraving on type metal or relief etching on zinc in his later work. .

The illustrations commemorate a variety of events and characters: disasters, political events, revolutions, crimes, miracles; cavorting Calaveras (skeletons) for the Mexican Day of the Dead (All Souls Day); the pleasures and pains of the people from a proletarian perspective.  There is horror, brutality and pathos, but also comedy and lightheartedness.

Prints include: "Calaveras del monton" (skeletons on the heap), La Calavera catrina (fashionable lady), Fire in a Mine, Fire in a Bullring, Plague in the Countryside, accidents, satire on a comet, confessions, possessions, collisions, murders, devils, kidnappers, executions, the Tiger of Santa Julia, student agitation, battles, prizefights, bullfights, Don  Chepito dancing, and numerous book covers, mastheads, and surreal and comic scenes.
