Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was one of the most prolific and successful book illustrators of the late 19th century. In 1867 he provided these hauntingly beautiful illustrations for the first four parts of Idylls of the King, Tennyson's classic poetic treatment of the Arthurian legends. Dore's illustrations are epic and dramatic, full of detail and power, and overlaid with a romantic melancholy. There are illustrations of sweeping dark mythical landscapes with castles rising above the valleys and forests. Knights on horseback, wizards and beautiful princesses populatethe land. Accompanied by synopses and appropriate quotations from Tennyson's poem, Dore's illustrations bring those marvellous legends to life.
